In late 2026 I’m planning to expand the music productions work I do, by starting to work with other musicians.
I’ve obviously collaborated with lots of great musicians before, but only ever as a musician writing and recording with them. This will be a new, different thing, where I’m now acting not as a musician myself, but as a producer of their songs.
So I force myself to remember the limits of my role when I do this, everything I do like this will come under one moniker: “Impulsive Productions”.

Why I’m doing this
This project exists for two reasons:
- To help someone who writes songs, but isn’t necessarily that familiar with recording and crafting that music into a final, polished thing, to create a 2-song “EP”.
- To help a musician to think about that creative project cohesively – more than just 2 separate songs – in terms of either tone/production style, and/or theme/content.
Who Impulsive Productions is for
This project is for songwriters who:
- Have several songs/song-fragments that they have written, but haven’t recorded.
- Are a solo act (other musicians could potentially get involved, but the songs are written by one person).
- Want to work with me playing the role of a “producer”, meaning I will be:
- Giving honest suggestions/advice about their songs, in terms of the arc, pace, etc.
- Working with them to plan out the way to record their songs (e.g. options for the instrumentation that could work best).
- Guiding the two songs recording process as a pair (in terms of structure and production style).
- Will do their best to stick to a schedule for the two songs’ production (not rushed, but roughly agreed at the start).
- Are ok for me to host their songs on my bandcamp/website (credited to them, and with any money made also going to them).
Here’s one I prepared earlier…
How the process works
Before we record:
- I listen to both songs (either a phone-type recording, or played to be directly).
- We talk about what you want the two songs to be focused on (as a pair). This can be in terms of theme, or instrumentation, or mood/pace.
- I give you some initial thoughts/suggestions on the demos.
- We decide together which song we will record first.
The recording process:
- You track the song at my recording spac (over 1-2 sessions).
- We try adding in any extra production ideas we’ve talked about (like effects, drums tone, etc., etc.).
- If I perform musically, it’s only as a session musician (i.e. at your direction).
- I give you an initial rough mix.
- You give me feedback on the the mix, and I make adjustments (no more than 2 rounds of these fixes).
- When both songs are complete in this way, I master them together (with one round of your review/ fixes).
